Our History
OUR SAVIOUR LUTHERAN CHURCH HISTORY
Using funds granted by the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, in 1951 a survey was carried out in the west end of Ottawa, an area then growing rapidly due to new housing developments.
Formal organization of the congregation occurred at a special meeting on October 15, 1951. The new congregation took the name “The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Saviour”.
After several months of searching, the site at 715 Roosevelt Avenue was purchased with the financial assistance of the Ontario District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
On June 20, 1954, ground was broken for the first structure, essentially the basement of the present Church. The Cornerstone was laid August 25, 1954, and the dedication took place on December 9, 1954.
In 1960, the building committee immediately began looking into the possibilities of expansion. On March 25, 1962, after the Worship Service, ground was broken for the new structure, which was dedicated on September 9, 1962.
The Church structure has continued to serve us well to the present day, although numerous minor modifications have been made over the years.
A chairlift was added in 1997, and in 2000 a sound system was installed, and the grounds landscaped.
Thanks to the generous support of our members, the congregation paid off the mortgage on the Church in 1990.
The congregation had decided to become financially self-supporting, reaching this milestone almost exactly 20 years after the organization of the congregation.
Our Saviour took part in the founding convention of Lutheran Church-Canada in 1988, and when that body became independent on January 1, 1989, we were a charter member of the East District.

The Church Parking lot is accessible from Melbourne Avenue. Handicapped Parking is available in the Church Parking Lot. No overnight parking.
